Gary Hoey (Gary Hoey)

In a post-Blow by Blow world of great guitar instrumentalists, Hoey’s combination of songwriting skills to match his pyrotechnical playing ability are what put his material a cut above even the most elite guitarists of the G-3 era. This and Bug Alley are his best. Every track on here is a musical composition in its purest sense, not just a showpiece for 64th notes played flawlessly in double time… There’s plenty of technical wizardry and speed of light soloing, but only when it fits into the song at hand. It’s a shame he hasn’t had the commercial success of guys like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai; his output definitely merits it.
